Dark god sounds a bit hollow. True, gods are powerful, but they need those pesky worshippers while demons appear to be able to fine without 😉

Anyway, since my post count on forums, even the ones I have posted on for more than a decade, have hardly reached 5,000, let alone 10,000, I suspect that might be my bitterness speaking. I will never achief the rank of god on this world 😉
So are you saying that Talarius wasn’t suppose to cheat? Does Tiernon actually even care? I mean Tom was a demon and i’m thinking the good acts of love don’t apply to them in Tiernon’s book.
From what I read in between the lines, Tiernon would not care. Exador pointed out Talarius was the most infused champion he had seen and some of Talarius’ acts and mindset don’t mash very well with those Greyhawk paladins Tizzy mentioned (unless they serve St. Cuthbert that is).

I am merely arguing on what mortal observers would likely conclude based on my limited experience with mortals on this planet called Earth. It is just that most humans on this world tend to stick to their illusions of comfort, at times suicidal so. Demons stealing power from your deity seems to make your god look rather weak, while gods using demons to punish their followers seems to be all in line with many religions. Then again, Astlan deities are not infallable and omnipotent, and as such a demon doing something wicked, like stealing the power of your deity, is probably a lot more comfortable than having your fundamental believes on what is good and right be shaked at its foundations* 😉

    * Even if the god apparently only got angry when you surrender and stab somebody in the back which might be seen as the deity being angry at the fact that you surrendered to Evil in the first place…. Mmmm… religion is complicated 😉
Retaliation from a God?

“But I’m an enslaved demon. My accused master ordered me to drain your holy Grace/mana to fuel his feindish spells. If you want to retaliate against someone, he is ultimatly responsible.”
As if gods ever bother to ask questions first… not to mention their track record in regards to only punishing the guilty are not too good either. Mind you, if you can say it quick and convincingly enough, you at least get the satisfaction of getting your accursed master hurt as well. Mind you, you might end up with the Rod on a crusade against the whole Wizard Council, which is probably fine by most demons, but Tom seems to care a bit about keeping innocents alive 😉
OK, so I guess I’m not going to be hitching a ride back to Astlan with him….

Aren’t you telling his story to the author guy? So don’t you already know what happened when he returned to Astlan? Or did he not return yet in book II? o:)

I am a bit late to the discussion, but wouldn’t most mortal observers of said duel actually conclude that the god is angry with his follower for that final bit of cheating and using Tom to express said feeling? I don’t know how things work in Astlan, but I have read about a couple of other worlds and in those planes paladins of uptight deities should not make promises they had no intent on keeping even when made to Evil. Furthermore, I suspect it is also a lot more comforting to mortals to belief the god used a demon to do this than that a demon can actually steal the power of your god. Hack, even said deity might prefer people to belief so since it keeps the image of infallibility intact.
I am looking forward to Exador’s reaction along with Beth and Ramses. Mainly their shock from the fight maybe something along the lines of “a lvl4 demon can’t do that.”

It will also be interesting seeing everyone’s else’s reaction since the fight was recorded.

Lastly I want to see if Tom changes any from stealing the gods mana near the end of the fight.
This, especially the commentary by the arch demons after Tom hops away. We get it in between, but I am really curious whether or not what Tom did was truly unique or just something archfiends don’t do because of some ancient unspoken accord between demons and deities…

Note that I have the suspicion the book contains the true names of one or more archdemons if not the upper echolon ones.
Scary, then I should stop posting right now. IN FACT I should bail out right now. How to unregister?
Or make yourself more useful to your demonic master alife and in mortal form so that they have no need to harvest your soul just yet. In other words, get others to buy the book and visit this forum 😉 And fighting that binding with all your strength is a good idea as well. It prevents you from ending up as a lousy imp, and the more powerful you are the less others will make your life miserable.

Mind you, Tilly seems to be assuming everybody registring here actually still has a soul to sell, or even had one to begin with :-”
Who would sell their souls to the demons anyway.
Arrogant, power hungry and/or desperate idiots who think they are the exception to the rule that can get the better side out of the deal or who don’t belief in souls and an afterlife. Tricking mortals is also very fun way. I know some demons love to get their hands on the soul of a person and then get one of their frieds to offer their soul in return. Idiotic mortals…

When I first started writing, this was a very select crowd of readers, but I’ve sort of been surprised how much this crowd has grown over the years and how many people that would have not been in the crowd are now at least conversant enough in the lingo and archetypes as to still be able to read it and get it.

Long live internet, LoftR movies, and electronic books 😉

@Rosver: I actually like ME3. Hack, I even enjoyed DA2 despite its rather glaring flaws (and with DA3 they certainly recovered that franchise). I have trained myself to ignore certain holes in the story, mostly because I don’t want my experience with game and story development to ruin my enjoyment of games, books and movies. I simply fill in plot-holes and inconsistencies subconsciously with my own explanations or shrug them away unless I am actually actively looking for them mostly when working on a project as an adventure designer/developer or when having fun discussing them. Of course, sometimes that bites me in the behind when I either focus too much on what never was even intended as a red herring or jump to the wrong conclusions. Finally, I refuse to let hours upon hours of fun to be ruined by a rather crappy 30 minute ending and a rather unnecessary Deus Ex Machina 😉

I’m not really aware of any video game bards…so I’m not going to include that. Oooh Guitar Hero meets World of Warcraft! Or Guitar Hero meets Diablo IV
The only video game bard (beyond from the D&D based games of course) I am aware of are from Dragon Age, were the difference between a bard and a minstrel is that bards are players in the Game, the political manouvering of the Orlesian nobility. In other words, they are a mix of entertainer/assassin/mostly spy for their noble patrons (if they are not young nobles them selves). They don’t have spells perse (it is a speciality of the rogue class), but can perform magical songs that boost the fighting capabilities of their companions.

Personally I always stick to whatever definition the book gives a particular job name. For one thing, fantasy novels are rarely historically accurate and for another even historical accurate stuff has a tendency to change depending on the era selected or the time the story was written in RL or what ever source material the author chooses to use/belief.

@TAG: D&D bards don’t have to have been at a particular event to have written balads about it, even if said balads are seens as historical accurate. Even if he was, how good is the memory of a demon anyway? Human memory is somewhat unreliable, and we don’t even have to deal with centuries. Is that of demons better? If so, by how much?

Of course, you should be careful not to look for too much meaning behind names either. My RL name has a meaning, but I am named after my grandfather not because of whatever it used to mean in Latin 😉 Sometimes the author simply likes the sound of the name and is not paying all that much attention to the meaning.

In all fairness Rosver, sex is a great way for demons to manipulate mortals 😉

In regards to the tridents, it wouldn’t surprise me that it has something to do with capturing and transporting souls. Isn’t it a fisherman’s weapon? I certainly remember seeing sketches of devils throwing bound souls on wagons and the like with the pitchforks.

Mind you, for all I know, the first one to depict demons with tridents was thinking of Poseidon…
So how do you think most demons acted when seeing tom and Rupert right next to each other, and how exactly does half demon puberty work? Do they grow bigger as they mentally mature and if so what determines their demonic age?
Damn, that is one big dangerous looking demon. Lets grovel and be nice so that he does not hurt me. Who is that weir little looking demon? Erm… never mind, if I look funny at it, the big one looks funny at me. Nice big demon… I am going now, ok? 😉

Somehow I doubt the average demon gives it much though 😉
But if I had 32 hours stuck on a plane/train/bus/car, I could get a lot of writing done…that’s about 100 pages, at least if its concentrated in big blocks of time.
You can write in a plane (or the bus and train for that matter)? Wow, now I am jealous 😉 I have tried it a couple of times (mostly adventure design for WotC and home games), but I just cannot concentrate enough in addition to the cramped sitting conditions. Now edit work is a different matter…
