MemberWhile waiting for book 4, I’ve gone through quite a number of Chinese Xianxia web novels. Most of them aren’t written in a way that would express significant insight into the human mind, human interaction, or creativity.
One of the exceptions is Absolute Choice. It reads as if it was written by an adult trying to see through the eyes of a child, instead of the opposite, which seems to be the norm in Xianxia.

MemberLet me guess: you’re writing it as a tool for yourself, and turning it into a product in order to double dip?

Can’t you see it is for true?
Can’t you feel
The spirit of love is touching you?

Long long way to reach heaven
It’s a long way to heaven from Nysegard.
While the Church strongholds in Nysegard have the conventional forms, what’s in the hearts of the people living in them?
Are they more Zen? Do they care more about the ideals and personal development, than the supposed embodiments of those ideals?

MemberI very much enjoy the feeling of not being spoonfed answers, but having to consider the different perspectives the different characters might have, in order to understand their interpretation of their observations.
Most of these fantasy novels have a single truth, which all of the characters pretty much agree on, no matter what their life experiences, social position, personality, intelligence, emotional entanglements, or conflicting interests are.
In real life, even friends often can’t agree on which restaurant to have lunch at, and even when the decision has been made, many of the lunch group will still feel like their choice was much better.
I can believe in magic, I can believe in vampires, but I can’t believe that someone telling me that two people truly see a matter exactly the same way, either understands people at all, respects me at all, or is telling a story that contains enough truth to be truth to be entertaining.

Member
They actually are related, but it’s not as simple as Rupert believes. As we know from Reggie, the demon that fathered Rupert does not have to be the actual father. Not saying that the demon was an incubus, but it could have been.
If Rupert has a built-in directive for becoming a wizard and summoning Orcus, it does change my view of the Orcus character.Mikey
MemberMaybe it’s a hedge against people trying to permanently kill him; every time someone seriously tries, there’s one more copy of him running around making life difficult for the kind of beings who’d try to permanently kill him in the first place?

For better or worse?
It depends. The Smiths and his half-siblings believed him to be sufficiently paranoid and crafty. If he was controlling Dis: worse, if it was a mutually beneficial deal: better. Let’s say Orcus had a reason to believe that he’d be rezzed on a low-mana plane, and would need someone to summon him to Astlan…
