• I think “spreading him out” helps.

We shall see what people think of Jenn and Gastrope’. They are busy at the beginning and then at the end (which you have not read yet–that’s Alpha 2).

Actually only the Freeholders aren’t busy at the end of the book…

But they’ve got another big day coming in late book 4 (ish)

Well, the Inferno won’t be super busy but it will be awkward there….

Harbinger was one of the options for the title of this book.

We had a poll at the end of HH Beta as to what to name the book.

Harbingers of Doom or Harbinger of Doom was in the running. Eventually went with Apostles of Doom.

I do love that word. Not something you typically use when introducing someone…

“Hi Sam, meet Susie the Harbinger of Samsung, she wants to give you a phone/toaster.”

    or

“Sally, this is Brent, the Harbinger of the iTunes Store, he has a 30 page document for you to agree to.”

    Doh!

That was what he was calling himself before.

Sheesh….I guess that was just a bit too obvious! My brain must be fried!

    OK,

In fixing this one, I do a search on emissary and find it used again by orcs in Orcopolis:

“On this great adventure to begin the Restoration of Glory, I have committed the resources of the Deathfinger clan, to be spearheaded by my son and heir Aggfred and his shield-mate Snoggard, who along with a band of Deathfingers, shall accompany Lord Tommus’ designated emissary to Ithgar, Beya Fei Geist, to the Doom of Ithgar!” Orcag proclaimed to loud cheers.

In this case it makes more sense to use emissary as in messenger.

And shaman does not work so well because there will eventually be more than one shaman. Plus it just doesn’t sound right.

    representative?

    Thoughts?

    Thanks for catching.

I just wondered about that an hour or two ago.

Duranor (Dwarven Elder of Grove) was telling Trevin about what she missed and I tried typing Gandros and meteors and corrected myself and thought “did I say Gandros before? That would be wrong”

But I was so busy writing, I forgot to go back and check.

I am thinking of releasing Alpha 1 tomorrow that will have an assortment of changes based on suggestions, including several new scenes that go into more detail that we’ve been discussing, and a little bit further towards the end.

in reply to: Alpha Reporting – Chapter 126 #5655

It’s a hard choice. When ideas are fresh, I like to get them down while thinking about it.

Plus if I rewrite something that can affect later scenes, or know I’m going to be doing that, I like to get that done before writing the later scene.

If I write the later scene with the “plan of going back” to fill in some context to justify the scene and then I never get to that point/say distracted, then it gets missed.

All that being said, some of the rewrite stuff takes multiple passes. There are some things I can start on, but that need to percolate before I can write, and in some cases later scenes will help inform the earlier scenes.

It’s really not a science, particularly in beta mode, where I am still figuring it out. This all goes much faster than the first book, which never had any sort of deadline, I just kept writing and rewriting literally for years.

in reply to: Questions about Demonic Translation Aura #5942
When I saw the question above about other beings who speak universal being able to project a Translation Aura, I remembered something from HH:
Jenn was waiting in line to fill a bucket of water from the wargtown well when an orc behind her bellowed out, “Hilda! You have returned! It is my turn to buy you a drink!” Her first thought was that it was odd to hear an orc [h]speak perfect trade tongue[/h].
Is this because Hilda and company are there and one or all of them are projecting some kind of Translation Aura?
Yep. That’s why.
I also have a question of my own: It has been mentioned in several places that the rules of magic change by varying amounts from one material plane to the next. Would this auto-translation work on a demon-mages’ knowledge of magic?
If a human travels to another plane with significantly different rules, I would assume that he would have to learn the new rules and then adjust all his spells accordingly. But, if a demon does the same thing, will he have to relearn? Or, will his knowledge of magic get auto-translated into the framework of the new universe and he will be ready to rock and roll with zero relearning to do?
The translation would not affect spell casting ability. You are correct in that you would need to learn new spells/new rules or at least test it out.

However, within a single universe, a localverse, no translation is needed. The laws of magic are exactly the same on each world in the localverse. Spells may be, and more powerful ones always are, different because of whoever invented them, but you can use the same spells on other worlds.

Animagic, however, works relatively reliably everywhere it can work. I say this because it’s mainly adhoc stuff that is done by feel/by gut/by experience and the animage can adapt as they detect differences/issues.

In particular, you will find that animistic druidism/shamanism is much more common/centralized than wizardry across worlds.

Gormegast, where Trig Bioblast lives has very little wizardry, it’s a tech universe. However, shamanism is a thing, and they use it for FTL communication between spacecraft/bases/worlds etc.

Actually the same thing that the shamans are doing in book 3 when they all get together. That works on a wide number of worlds.

    Yes evil log gremlins….

this site, and this forum log everything to the database, including goofy errors, all sorts of actions.

It basically filled the database up–10 Gigs, about 7 of which were in log files that can be pruned-but it’s very slow to do so.

So I basically upgraded to the first of the pay versions. The advantage of this one is that the database can use multiple processors and more than 1 GB ram and can have a db bigger than 10 Gb.

I notice the performance is definitely better now…so that’s good.

Yes, so 6 hours difference to me.

We’ve got people around the globe at all hours on the site.

It makes it very hard to do maintenance. It’s not a huge number of people, but there are enough that I get nervous about rebooting the server while someone is in the middle of writing a very long/hard thought out post.

It really sucks to write out a really long post and then have it not saved as the system randomly hands/reboots.

in reply to: 2 quick question for TAG #6140

Yes, the Tizzy thing was a bomb shell to the readers, but for Tizzy and the senior D’Orcs it’s not that big a deal. He used to run around with a book/journal and now he’s not. It’s been 4000 years, maybe he just got tired of journallng everything, if that is what he was doing.

The D’Orcs really do not, or may be do not know what the book is either. They are not that interested in books, to them it was just one of his quirks.

Tizzy is really not that concerned about it because he knows the secret to opening it, and he’s pretty sure no one’s going to figure that secret out. And yes, the book that Lenamare has is Tizzy’s book. So Tizzy knows it is safe. In fact it is probably in the safest place it can be at the moment, now that it’s been “found” if it had never been found, it would have obviously been safer.

Tom’s got conflicting emotions that probably aren’t obvious, given what you say.

He feels he is “bluffing” these people, in regards to the Lord Tommus stuff. He doesn’t want to show weakness to “other players” in the game. Nor to people that support him. This was probably more obvious in earlier books, but he’s still doing that. So stuff happens, he tries to swing with it and pretend that was part of the plan.

So I think that is probably something I need to have him worry about more.

Tom does think something is up with Tizzy. He noted the Tiz-Arog-Dal and now the demon weed thing. But you gotta also remember that there is a lot of Tizzy insanity that we don’t see. Remember when they were all at Tom’s cave and Tizzy was having hours and hours of conversations with himself? (In many cases he was posting here in the forums)

The point being Tizzy in real life has a much much strong presence than in the books even. Meaning he really does seem to be crazy. So it’s just hard for people to believe he could be the master mind of some plot.

Now from the book thing, we know that the D’Orcs know that he is more important etc than he appears, but remember even they have a love-hate relationship with him. They are often very frustrated by him as we saw when they first show up at Mount Doom.

So anyway, Tom is suspicious of all of that. But it’s really just hard to convince onesself that Tizzy could be some sort of master mind.
