Let me look more into the timing of the Nysegard adventure. I believe this is after a couple oaths on Talarius’ part. At one point, Talarius has basically agreed to the rules of Hostage and in medieval sense, that means he won’t try to escape.
Yep, Talarius swore the oaths of hostage in book 2.
Tom, of course, knows that Talarius can’t escape on Nysegard, there is no where for him to go, there are no Tiernonites on the Isle of Doom; but as far as “contacting Tiernon” part–not sure that it didn’t just slip his mind. He really is not used to clerical types and their relationship to their gods. And even from what he does know, Talarius is a warrior, not a cleric, so he probably really didn’t put all the pieces together. The thing to remember is that Tom is overwhelmed and quite frankly Talarius is as much a pain in the ass as anything else. Despite what others might think, he only abducted Talarius on the spur of the moment to “teach him a lesson”
However, this has been brought up a few times, so I should probably put more of Tom’s thinking in there.
Actually I brought up the line about Tom’s worries because it was specifically in regards to Nysegard. The way it reads is basically that Tom doesn’t want Talarius on Nysegard because Tom believes it would allow Talarius to contact Tiernon.
IumeMemberNooooo, I have added to your burden and thus perhaps delayed alpha1. Noooo.
IumeMemberWhat is the latest estimate? Friday? I figure you are still working the final 20% while incorporating the changes.
IumeMemberIIRC in bk1 it is said/implied that all life including plants have animus. It was in… the appendices? I’d need to check.
IumeMemberExcerpts from Book 1 – Appendix VI, also http://www.astlan.net/Home/CouncilofWizardryLibrary/AnimusandMana.aspx
“Plants and non-thinking life forms have the lowest levels of Animus; animals have considerably higher, and sentient creatures higher yet.
…
As something ages or becomes more experienced, its Animus grows.
…
Animus by its very nature attracts Mana. The more Animus a thing has, the more Mana it attracts. Some of the attracted Mana is apparently “consumed” by the Animus and the Animus grows.
…
Animus must be contained or it will quickly disperse. Larger concentrations take longer to be dispersed; thus, when a plant dies its Animus tends to go back into nature rather quickly, breaking back down to other substances and perhaps back into raw Mana.
…
Non-magical and non-magic using creatures accumulate mana and store some of it in themselves to sustain their Animus.
…
Unless something else is done with it, excess Mana simply dissolves back into nature. Certain magical spells and magical creatures are capable of harnessing this Mana before it is absorbed by nature.”
This seems to imply the amount of mana generated = biomass mana generated * XP factor – mana needed for sustaining life.
Since bacteria are non-intelligent and so low mass it is very likely that the excess mana available is very low. Also the biomass of bacteria vs. the equivalent of a wizard is very very very low in comparison. It might be possible for bacteria and plants to gather a lot of excess mana that can then be harvested but I suspect the scale makes it non-profitable.
Interestingly enough this might be a method to make a self-aware Gaia planet à la Foundation series or Petaybee series. Maybe sufficient biomass results in self-aware elementals outside of the elemental planes.
IumeMemberThis is awkward sounding because how you twice used D’Wargs in the sentence reads as a bad case of redundancy.
“D’Wargs!” Valg’s mother shouted seeing that along with the D’Orcs came a huge outpouring of D’Wargs!
IumeMemberAccording to his commanders, Nysegard had been greatly favored by D’Orcs. This was due to the fact that the situation in Nysegard, for a very long time, had been very clear cut. There had been no questions of politics, diplomacy, negotiating, no chance of peace short of outright victory; in Nysegard it was a pure battle for survival. There were no wishy washy labels of good or evil, no FOG or FOE; there was only Life and Unlife.
This seems like Tom’s interpretation of what the D’Orcs told him about fighting on Nysegard, but did they really “worry” about things like politics, diplomacy, and peace when NOT on Nysegard? It implies they did.
Also, wishy-washy not wishy washy.
IumeMemberI re-read the Inferno’s entry to the Abyss. As long as a portal to Midgard is open it seems that the godpool is accessible by those in the Abyss. So it would seem that you could establish a 2-way portal, aka what the Doomalouges do, and have power be accessible. It doesn’t seem to have anything to do with special construction of Mount Doom. Just need to establish a permanent portal.
So… when Tom opened the portal to Nysegard why didn’t the godpool become re-accessible to the priests of Tiernon aboard the Inferno?
IumeMemberSo now that Talarius has reestablished his connection he could just walk back into Mount Doom and keep his connection until such a time as the Nysegard portal is closed.
Hm, if a person traverses two portals such as Astlan -> Abyss -> Nysegard without closing any of them would the godpool connection in Nysegard remain once the Astlan portal is closed?
IumeMember
Well the demons can trace the bindings back to where their master is, they have to be able to in order to show up where they are called.
This reminds me, Reggie was able to return to Astlan w/o being summoned because he followed the binding. This seems to imply that ANY demon could follow its binding back to its master and attack if it wanted. And yet there is nothing that seems to indicate this is so or has happened.
Is this consistent w/ books 1 and 2?
IumeMemberHm, I went back and checked it was a dream-walking method he used to get to Astlan so he never physically manifested. It’s just that when I read it I had the impression he physically travelled via the fade method.
He wished there was some way he could make her summon him. Yes, he knew that it wasn’t supposed to work that way, but he wished he could. He shook his head, wishing he could follow that binding link sticking out of his chest, follow it through the astral plane to Merit-Ptah’s house. Reggie closed his eyes imagining how he’d do it. Just like in his dream-loving sessions, he would follow the link through the crazy lights until he saw her sleeping form.
I’ve made the parts that created that impression bold. Especially where it says “Just like in his dream-loving sessions” which implies what he is doing is NOT his dream-loving/walking.
IumeMemberThe gold is working better than the silver for the back cover for the blue sky. It looks like the gold has a black outline / shadow that is helping it to stand out compared to the silver. Of course, the spots where it is gold on orange sky is also hard to read.
Edit: Why is the sun casting blue light?
IumeMemberAh, but the rays of light as seen on the back cover are coming from what looks like a 45 degree angle overhead. So, mid-afternoon is what I assumed.
IumeMember*Cough* Talarius knew Ruiden was sentient, did not know it was sapient. Sorry, I had to add this since in bk1 & bk2 you had this oddity for the exact usage of words like decimate being 10% which correct but not common usage.
IumeMemberRegarding Alpha1’s ETA, should I set aside time Saturday to go through it or plan for next week?
